Privacy Policy Details
How do we protect student information?
The Service will not knowingly retain student information beyond the time period required to support an educational purpose, unless authorized by a school, teacher or parent, for safety and security purposes, as required by law, or to enforce the Terms.
If a student’s school or teacher elects to utilize student emails in school or otherwise adds a student’s email, the school will be responsible for obtaining any necessary parental consent under COPPA (including if they choose to act as the agent of the parent and consent on the parent’s behalf – commonly referred to as “school consent” under COPPA) to add the student email on behalf of the student and let students receive pass notifications. The teacher will provide the student’s name when setting up a class or modifying a roster. Student names and email addresses are added, modified, and verified by teachers when creating a class or modifying a roster. Student emails are not required. Teachers may exclude student email addresses, and still use the Service. A child’s email address cannot be added to the service without the child’s teacher representing to ClassRelay that they have obtained any necessary parental consent. If your child’s email or your email was added by your child’s teacher or school, please contact the appropriate official at your child’s school to access, review, correct or delete any of your child’s personal information in the Service. If the school determines that the request should be implemented, the school may either make the change themselves or submit the request to ClassRelay by emailing the ClassRelay Privacy Team. Student email addresses are used by the Service to notify the recipient of a relevant action in the Service when a teacher has included the email address, turned on notifications for the type of action, and turned on notifications for students. In addition, students can stop receiving emails from the Service at any time by following the “unsubscribe” link in any of our emails or the request can be submitted to ClassRelay by emailing the ClassRelay Privacy Team. No child can upload any content to the Service.
We use the personal data we collect to provide and improve the Service to the student, for educational, safety and security purposes, as required by law, or to enforce the Terms. If we discover that we have collected information from a child in a manner inconsistent with COPPA, we will take appropriate steps to either delete the information, or immediately seek the parent’s consent for that collection. We do not disclose any personal information about children to third-parties except to service providers necessary to provide the Service, as required by law, or to protect the security of the Service or other users.
Information collected from students is never used or disclosed for third-party advertising or any kind of behaviorally-targeted advertising and it is never sold or rented to anyone, including marketers or advertisers.
If you have questions about specific practices relating to Student Records provided to the Service by a School, please direct your questions to your School.
What information do we collect from our users?
ClassRelay collects very limited data about any of its users. ClassRelay only collects as little data as is necessary to provide the Service. The data and personal information we collect is necessary for our legitimate interest in being able to provide and improve the Service, to allow us to comply with our legal obligations, and to provide the products, content or services you request. It is important to note that the amount and type of data that is and can be collected varies by type of user. There are currently five types of users on the Service: administrators, teachers, parents, students, and visitors. NO student, parent, teacher, administrator, or student information is made available or visible to the general public through the functionality of the Service. You may be required to create an account, and you may be required to login according to your use of the Service.
Data we collect may be provided to the Service by our users, may be collected automatically, or may be provided to the Service by a third-party. For example, the Service may collect personal information from users when creating a user account, adding or editing a class, modifying the student roster, upgrading a user account, making a purchase, or when using other aspects of the Service. The Service also collects and stores certain information automatically using cookies and similar technologies, including IP addresses, the region or general location of a computer or device accessing the internet, browser type, operating system, page view history, and other usage information. See our Cookie Policy for further details. The categories of personal information may include:
To the extent that any cookie can uniquely identify a compute, mobile device, or tablet (“Device”), or the person using that Device, and you are a EU resident, under the GDPR, this is personal data. Therefore, this privacy policy shall apply to such personal data collected by the Service.
In some cases, you may want to provide the Service with additional information, such as the school’s name, an administrator’s name, or an administrator’s phone number.
Student names and parent, student, and administrator email addresses are added, modified, and verified by teachers when creating a class, modifying a class, or modifying a roster. Email addresses for students, parents, and administrators are not required. Teachers may exclude student, parent, and administrator email addresses, and still use the Service, however they may not benefit from all features of the Service. A child’s email address cannot be added to the service without the child’s teacher or school representing to ClassRelay that they have obtained any necessary parental consent. Student, parent, and administrator email addresses are used by the Service to notify the recipient of a relevant action in the Service when a teacher has included the email address, turned on notifications for the type of action, and turned on notifications for the type of user in question. In addition, students, parents, and administrators can stop receiving emails from the Service at any time by following the “unsubscribe” link in any of our emails or the request can be submitted to ClassRelay by contacting the ClassRelay Privacy Team.
We will use commercially reasonable efforts to process such requests in a timely manner consistent with applicable law. We will need to verify your identity, for example by requiring that you provide acceptable forms of personal identification.
What security measures do we take to safeguard your data?
ClassRelay uses the latest stable crypto-graphic practices and was built with privacy by design. The ClassRelay team is dedicated to data security, so you can rest assured your school’s passes are safe. ClassRelay puts the security of your personal information and data first. The Service is built from the ground-up with you in mind. ClassRelay maintains safeguards which include technical and organizational security measures to protect your personal data from loss, misuse, unauthorized use, access, inadvertent disclosure, alteration, and destruction. We also require that the third parties we contract with to support ClassRelay’s business operations to employ reasonable security measures as well.
Your personal data (e.g. name and email address) is encrypted. We use SSL, so that your data is encrypted as it leaves your device. Your personal data is also encrypted before it is stored on our databases. Your password is hashed and cannot be retrieved by any third-parties or anyone on the ClassRelay team.
We update and test security on an ongoing basis. Along the way we try to break ClassRelay, but always come up short — ClassRelay was made to be impenetrable and we constantly reinforce all our protocols to ensure your data has no way of leaking out.
What do we do with the personal data we collect?
We use the personal data we collect to communicate with you, deliver what you request, improve the Service, to present other information and offers that may be of interest, for educational, safety and security purposes, as required by law, or to enforce the Terms.
Information collected from students is never used or disclosed for third-party advertising or any kind of behaviorally-targeted advertising and it is never sold or rented to anyone, including marketers or advertisers.
We may use your personal data to send you important notices, such as registration information for the Service, transactions on the Service, and changes to ClassRelay’s Terms, conditions, policies, and/or other internal purposes. Teacher, student, parent, and administrator email addresses are used by the Service to notify the recipient of a relevant action in the Service when a teacher has included the email address, turned on notifications for the type of action, and turned on notifications for the type of user in question. In addition, teachers, students, parents, and administrators can stop receiving emails from the Service at any time by following the “unsubscribe” link in any of our emails or the request can be submitted to ClassRelay by contacting the ClassRelay Privacy Team.
We may contact you to offer you additional ClassRelay or third-party products, content or services that may be of interest to you. You can stop receiving all or only certain kinds of emails from the Service at any time by following the “unsubscribe” link in any of our emails or the request can be submitted to ClassRelay by contacting the ClassRelay Privacy Team.
We will use commercially reasonable efforts to process such requests in a timely manner consistent with applicable law. We will need to verify your identity, for example by requiring that you provide acceptable forms of personal identification.

All data collected is used purely and exclusively to provide your account with full support of ClassRelay's features. If you ever have any question regarding a bug, a security concern, or any other data-related question or report, please contact the ClassRelay Privacy Team.
